Wow!

This is the best news ever! This piece (8″x8″ matted to 12″x12″) has been selected for the permanent collection at Michigan State University Art Museum.  Wow.

Here’s the notice I received…

As part of the planning for This is a Quilt! SAQA arranged for 50 pieces to become part of the permanent collection at the Michigan State University Museum. We engaged gallerist Michael Solomon to select those pieces. The pieces will go to the Michigan State University Museum at the close of the trunk show travels.Michael Solomon wrote:
When Kris Sazaki first asked me to be the juror for a collection to go to the Michigan State University Museum, I willingly accepted, thinking it would be a piece of cake. After all, I had owned a fine art gallery in Sacramento for over 10 years, and I had certainly chosen art and artists for many gallery exhibits. I faced a slightly greater challenge with group shows as opposed to solo exhibits, but I felt I had a pretty good grasp of the contemporary painting and sculpture we exhibited. I have also juried shows outside of my gallery, as well as my own photography exhibits.

For the SAQA show, I came to realize that my mandate would limit and challenge me when I faced the prospect of selecting just 50 pieces out of 268 submissions. I have spent many hours in art museums around the world, I am an avid collector, and I have formulated some ideas as to what constitutes “great art.” While the quality of art may be subjective, great art is simply that which compels one to look at it, again and again and again. This is the truth, if not a truism. And that’s the reason museums full of art that visitors repeatedly visit, contain great art. I can’t stop looking at and admiring the art on my walls and pedestals; if I do, I end up replacing it with something better, and then repeat the process.

In jurying this show, I looked for aesthetic design, shapes, color, composition, texture, and subject matter. I am somewhat partial to figurative subject matter, so that may have affected my judgment in some respects. All of the work I viewed exhibited high artistic quality, and I found myself initially choosing way more than my allotment of 50. I then faced the agonizing task of deselecting many pieces I appreciated. In any event, I hope you enjoy my selections.

Back to Work

For me it’s not back to school; It’s back to work! I always think I’m going to get so much done during the summer and then I don’t. Well, time’s up.

Here’s a fairly bad picture of the large quilt that my teenager designed and I put together. It’s done and off to my friend Lori at Sew Beautiful so she can do her magic with her long arm machine.

And, just because I can… Here’s a picture of Kevin with his teddy. His summer camp mostly included ’Play Fetch’ and ‘Scare the Squirrel’!

a modern quilt

I have a new project but it’s not my design. It’s uber modern. My teenager designed it and I’m making it. So fun!

Here are some sketches and a sneak preview of what it will look like…

I can’t wait to see it finished!

New and Improved Website!

I’ve been out of the blogosphere for a bit but I’m back and so happy to announce that my website has been updated and renovated thanks to my wonderful webmaster, Steve Seebart. What a lot of work that was! You can check it out here: www.susanelaine.com or click the link to the right.

It seems that when I take some time off from creating, the studio space becomes an open target for ‘stuff’. Ages ago I posted a picture of my studio and one of my friends mentioned that it looked really clean and neat. And it did. And today it doesn’t. Today is the first of many cleaning days to get it back to that first picture. Here’s the reality…

fresh for summer

I picked up a bright white frame to see how my 8 by 10 landscapes might look in it. I like it! I’ll be painting that wall blue this summer and I think that will help to set off the blues in the piece. Maybe that’s the motivation I need to get to the paint store. : )

Why I’m Not a Wire Sculpter

After a short break due to three out of state sports tournaments, Susan finds herself 1 step closer to a brand new website.

Well, that’s because I’m not creating it!! It’s close to completion and I love it. I’ve got to send pictures to my talented webmaster that show how small artwork can be displayed so I thought I’d just pick up a bit of wire and sculpt it into a few lovely creations that would enhance my work.

Can I just say…’not’. I had no idea that shaping wire is so hard. The wire has a mind of its own and is very stubborn. Suffice it to say that smaller fiber art pieces look lovely in matted frames and someday I hope to say something kind about the wire thingy.

Here’s where I started…

This is what I  got. AAAK!

I won’t give up on the wire but this is my best alternative in the meantime.
