Beyond the words of our experiences lie the feelings and textures of our lives. I’ve compiled a timeline of my life through textiles. Included are swatches from my parents’ clothing, lace from my wedding dress, fabrics representing significant moments in my life, stitching (look for the X’s) that shows the many times I moved, pennies from each decade, and an array of feelings pent up in the fibers of every fabric.

Each small piece of cloth represents a moment, an emotion, or an event—whether significant or petty—that made me who I am today. Look for the sweater stained by the school bully, the cream yarn of the first afghan my mother made, the bear that reminded me of all the camping trips, or the flannel that I used to make each of my daughters’ baby blankets.

Creating this was art therapy in action.
